Fall into Sisterhood with a dairy dessert and find out what’s happening! Just a fun get-together and a chance to say welcome! Not a member of our Sisterhood? Please come and join. We’d love to have you, and we definitely need you! 7:00 p.m. at the Synagogue on Thursday, November 19, 2009.

What a great meeting–we had a great turnout and good participation–thanks to everyone for such an enthusiastic meeting! Committees were formed, volunteers were gotten and the food was great (thanks Suzanne Back!)! Plans are in the works to begin recycling in the Shul kitchens, the Mikvah will be getting a lot of attentio, and we look forward to our upcoming events (Hamentashen baking, the MJH Birthday Party, Shaloch Manot Baskets and our Purim Carnival! e’ll also be adding another meeting–time and date to come out soon! A very special thank you to Cindi Weinstein for taking minutes (which you can read below!) and congratulations to Diana Lazar on winning the door prize!!!

ASBEE SISTERHOOD MEETING

NOVEMBER 19, 2009

MINUTES

Attending:

Estaline Katz Diana Lazar Erika Sigel

Abby Felt Laura Lazar Paula Kaplan

Hilda Dlugach Audrey Joffre Anna Cohen

Marsha Norvell Shirley Kaplan Frances Evensky

Karen Siskind Audrey Siskind Jennifer Roberts

Mary Anna Kaplan Myrna Platkin Marcia Platkin

Suzanne Back Linda Joffre Adina Samberg

Diane Cooperman Elaine Fox Cindy Saccharin

Cindi Weinstein Julie Levy

Introduction and Welcome was given by Julie Levy, Sisterhood President. The meeting was called to order.

Words of inspiration were given by Adina Samberg. She spoke of this week’s Parsha as it related to generations. She very nicely tied that into the sisterhood speaking of the many attributes coming together to work as a team.

Audrey Joffre presented the budget report. $788 has been received for the directory. The cost was $550. She thanked Shirley Kaplan and Cindy Saccharin for all their hard work on the directory. The BBQ netted $2700 this year. Thank you to the chairs Debbie Lazarov, Pam Malkin, and Marci Platkin.

Julie discussed the High Holy Days Nursery. Everything ran smoothly and no complaints were received. She thanked those in charge to include Myrna Cohen and Jodie Faber.

The Gold Sell by Arthur Back brought in >$400 profit. It was brought to floor the possibility of having another sell. Suggestions included the sell being conducted at the time of another big shul event, possibly the Purim carnival. Julie will discuss with Arthur the details.

The idea of a mikvah committee was presented. A sign up sheet was available for those interested. Diane Cooperman is in charge of the mikvah. It is a sisterhood responsibility and needs attention. The committee will meet to discuss needed repairs, consider options, and plan possible fundraisers to finance the clean up.

Abby Felt brought to the floor the attention to the kitchens which is also a sisterhood responsibility. There are needed supplies, for example pizza pans. The ovens need to be calibrated periodically. The kitchens are “money makers” for the sisterhood. As of October 31, 2009, they have brought in >$2000 for the year. The expenditure has only been approximately $100. It was suggested that we perform an inventory of both kitchens listing what is available, then comprise a list of what is needed. It was agreed by all that whatever was needed (to include new towels and hand mitts) should be purchased. Mary Anna Kaplan volunteered to oversee this adventure. A schedule of kitchen needs will be made and pre scheduled, for example calibration of ovens, cleanings, etc. She will give Julie a list of needed supplies.

Julie introduced the new sisterhood website, www.asbeesisterhood.org. It has just been developed so not much available but more will be added to it in the future. Hopefully will be able to link it to the ASBEE website also. Possibilities of using the website to make reservations to sisterhood events, make payments for the events, etc. were discussed. Jennifer Roberts asked how many were unfamiliar with the use of the web/computers. Several raised their hands. She informed them of a computer class for seniors at the MJCC that will take place for four days in December during the first two weeks. If anyone is interested, please contact Jennifer Roberts.

The Jewish Home Birthday Party was discussed. A sign up sheet was available for those interested. It will be held on Feb. 18th Thursday from 1pm – 3pm.

Julie expressed her amazement at the Sisterhood Study Circle. She attended for the first time recently and it was a great experience and very enjoyable. It is held approximately 5 times a year. Lunch is $3.00. Julie expressed her thoughts that this was not enough for the lunch. She felt the price could be raised to approximately $5.00. Many others did not agree stating that they did not lose money on the meetings, the cost covered the expense. The cost of lunch will stay the same for now. It was also brought to the floor the option of doing a class in the evening so those that worked could attend. It was felt this should not take the place of the daytime class but be an additional class. Suzanne Back agreed to chair this event. She will discuss possible dates at the end of January and will ask the Rabbi or Bluma if they would be able to teach the class.

The “Go Green” committee was discussed. This is a new project with Esther Lubin and Diane Harkavy as chairs. The goal is to get the shul recycling.

Julie brought up the need for the addition of one more fundraiser. Some possibilities included having the Kowsher Café at the Friends for Israel event at Shelby Farms on Memorial Day weekend. Sell the BBQ/Hamburgers, etc. Some members expressed a lack of interest. They had been asked to do this last year and turned it down. It will be discussed further in the future. No decision was made at this time. A candy sell was also mentioned as a possibility, maybe Pesach candy. It would be pre packaged candy. Orders would be taken and then delivered. The sisterhood would get a percentage of the sells. Several were concerned because other schools in the city sell candy throughout the year and it might not be successful. BSS and Temple have sold Pesach candy in the past. It will be discussed again later also.

Beth Sholom Sisterhood wants to do a joint event possibly in February. Could be a fun event or a fundraiser where the sisterhoods split the profit. It was mentioned doing a “Bid and Buy” event. A vote was taken to determine who would be interested and the majority agreed that they would be willing to participate and were not opposed to a joint venture.

The Purim carnival will be February 21st this year.

The meeting was brought to a close and the drawing was performed for the door prize. The winner was Diana Lazar. The prize was an ECD Cookbook from the MJCC. Everyone was reminded to sign up for the different committees to include the Chanukah Dinner/Ham. Baking/Jewish Home Birthday Party/Go Green/Mikvah.
